When to Donate, when to Toss?

Ever wondered when to donate & when to toss an item? Read below!

Have you done the hard work of decluttering only to ask yourself now what? It’s common to wonder and fall into confusion and overwhelm.  We get asked by clients when, where and what to donate, and when to toss?

We have the answers!

When to donate? Simply put, the best time to donate is in accordance with when the item will be going on the shelves and the donation facility. Meaning… donate spring items in the spring, not in the winter when donation centres would have to store it because it’s out of season. If you donate a toboggan in the middle of summer, chances are it isn’t going on the shelf that season, if you’re catching my drift.

When to toss you ask? Well, we suggest not to donate open bathroom items, broken items or items with missing parts, open or expired food, soiled or stained items, etc. These items are better suited for the trash can. If you wouldn’t buy it on a second-hand shelf, toss it.

Areas that you may not have thought of donating to are:

• Unopened bathroom products - you can donate these to women’s shelters/local food banks

• Linens and towels with small stains  - you can donate these to pet shelters

• Kids books - your local free library would love these as a donation!

When you donate at the right time to the right location everyone is happy.
