Pro Tips for Declutterring, Downsizing and Dwelling More Peacefully in the New Year

What a perfect time of year to reflect on this! As the new year approaches, we often hear the phrase "New Year, New You." I'll admit, I've used it myself in the past. But sometimes, I wonder if it’s not about changing who we are, but rather about the environment around us that influences how we feel. What if, instead of focusing on reinventing ourselves, we embraced the idea of creating new surroundings to bring out the best version of who we already are? Many of you likely love who you are, and the things around you may not fully reflect your true self. Let’s reframe it: think of it as uncovering and improving what’s already there—beneath the clutter and the "stuff."

Tip #1: Schedule Your Sorting in Small Blocks of Time

I’m sure if you have been around here you have heard me use the idea that organizing is a muscle that needs to be exercised. I think starting with a small area that can be tackled in one go is a great way to start the process. Not only does it give you a huge boost but there will not be a huge area to tackle or put away for multiple days.. this is what can be overwhelming and stop people in their tracks.

Tip #2: Don't Succumb to Sentimental Sticking Points

Keeping in mind that we are not trying to create a whole new you, but what we are attempting to do is to improve upon what is already there. Love to craft but can’t because you can’t get in the craft room or can’t even begin to find the craft that you started? Consider do you want to be a crafter? Has it run its course for you? Could you donate some of the craft supplies so that you can get in the room in order to do what you love? If you still love it at all. Don’t let the past of what you “used to like, or used to do” take over. Don’t become so sentimentally attached to the thought of being that person that you keep all “the stuff” that goes along with it just because.

Tip #3: Partner Up for Extra Purging Accountability

No doubt the difficulty comes when decisions need to be made, it’s hard. It doesn’t matter if it is bakeware, books, hobbies or sporting equipment, so many decisions and questions can stall the process. Before even beginning with help I think it’s a good idea to start by sitting quietly with yourself and decide what it is that improved you looks like? what do you love to do? what will you continue to do? how do you want to live? what do you want to make space for? After reflecting on these questions you should have a clearer picture. ,... then call me and I will help you through the difficult questions left.

Tip #4: Reassess Often & Repeat the Process Regularly

Muscles get built over time, and with everything there will be times you don’t want to do it, so give yourself some grace and space to reflect on your why. Why do you want to improve your space and change up your life? and then proceed with exercising that “organizing” muscle by following the above steps.

Organizing can make a huge difference in your life, and I encourage you to do it if it feels right, but also remember to focus on your why.

See you soon,
